My 6C GTI '16 manual started making weird noises at around 3k rpm. What could this be?

It does it in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. I don't think it does it in higher gears. Or I can't hear it at those higher speeds
The noise is mechanical. It's almost as if something that's spinning is in contact with something that isn't.
It doesn't happen all the time, but it tends to do it under load. For example, it does it when going up the hill (without flooring).
It starts and ends at around 3k rpm.
Weirdly enough, I haven't heard it do it during shorter journeys when it hasn't warmed up properly.
No other side effects or issues apart from the noise. The car still pulls well.
The car has done 64k miles, serviced this week. No performance or suspension mods have been done to it.

It's a manual and it doesn't do it when revving it up in neutral. It doesn't always do it when flooring it either which is odd.
