I suppose I should be happy...

Post by nuttinnew »

Remember all those 'I've fitted -40mm springs to my car and it doesn't look any lower.' comments you've heard over the years? Well...when letting the car down after fitting the springs I thought I'd measure how far down it had actually gone...

my -60mm springs have dropped it 90mm

All good you may think and to look at it you'd be right but....I got 60mm on the basis that my 16v shocks would be adequate, with 90mm that isn't the case!

Where can I get a pair of front shortened shocks asafp? I'm none too happy with it as it is...

ouch, that's sounds like a reason to complain to who sent em to you!

Do you want to change the shocks because the handling has gone to pot, or because you think they will pop?

mine is very low on standard 16v shocks, but I don't have any troubles (yes i am cheap)

anyhow, not sure where you can get em asap. airspeed will get you some but they'll take a few days. don't know anywhere that will have em in stock....

A bit of both really; bottoms out far too easily and has, I feel, insufficient damping. The former is probably due to the later of course! How far has yours gone down and did you fit your 16v shocks from new? Could just be they are more tired then I was led to believe....(20k old)...hmm, I may try fitting the Spax Golf mk1 top adjustable inserts I have in the front, they should be up to the job.

Clearance wise I can happily live with it as I'm still able to go speed bumps etc and can get up my driveway which is at at least 45 degrees to the road.

A local breakers has shortened mk2 shocks with a receipt for May this year but it was front ended and bent the driver's side one :( I could get the rears though :)

mine's a 16v anyway, so round corners the ARB helps out a bit, and over bumps I don't seem to ever bottom out

one thing you might need to do is shorten the bump stops - i cut an inch off mine. did you do that? that would cause it to bottom out too quickly.

i've done about 90mm at a guess - i can just fit fit my hands in the arch above the tyre.

keep us posted

I did cut a rather large chunk off of the bumpstops, tis true it may well not be enough (I'll remove some more tomorrow). I will get round to fitting the arb I have, just annoying the exhaust needs splitting to get it on.

Thanks for the replies (thumbs up and beer smilies) :D
