for ease... TBH i would say get the loom ecu and 3f lump

got a lot more grunt than a 1.3nz lol

1ls arent worth it

dont know much about other lumps 1.6's 1.8s 1.4's etc

although i think with a giant shoe horn and some work u can get a 1.6 16v in there

It has to be a "short block" engine, unless you're prepared to make yourself a custom bonnet with a big ass bulge in it - and custom mounts. Which unfortunately rules out a lot of the larger units. I think I've heard one story of someone getting a 1.6 in there, but it was either a hybrid setup, or some short stroke oversquare variant. Mostly a 1.4 is your lot in a mk3, from as much as i've seen thru ukp anyway.

However a 1.4 GT or G40 would be a satisfying drive. The car's so lightweight after all that you can give some people a surprise in a 1.0 (and the regular GT/G40s are no slouches), so those would be very sparky.

I've heard that a 1.6 8v single point injection golf engine will go. It looks nearly identical to the polo one, and would require an additional engine mount making up, the 1.3SPi Polo throttl body, and if you wanted to a Mark3 gearbox.

Best Power per £ has to be the 3F engine. Anything else you need plenty of money to do...

I'll second that, don't be fooled by the fact that you can get a G40 engine for under a grand. To do a G40 conversion 100% properly it's best to get all sorts of things renewed, like the charger (£500 if you want to go full blend, which you will!) fuel pumps (over £200 from VW, and at least £120 from GSF) filters and whatever gaskets are old and cronky. Things like that add up!

Including fitting and minus what I hope to get for my GT engine taken off my G40 conversion is costing me... well... a fair amount more than a grand.
