My Squareback

Post by Mk2Adam »

i thought i'd post up some pics of my 1043cc hatchback, my sister works at a vw dealers and she got it for my 18th for £50, i'm still learning to drive but i've got my test in july so hopefully not too long now. it's a H reg (wierd considering they stopped building mk2's in 1990?) it's done 61,705 miles in it's 16 year life. I've fitted a CD player that i had spare from when my sis got a new car, and general cleaning to get rid of the dog smell and hairs, will be removing the rusty tow bar asap and as per my other post i'm trying to fit some scirocco alloys. i've got one of them richbrook metal gear surrounds recently....other than that i'm going for a retro oldskool look e.g. no 4 inch exausts or boot installs coming near my car!!! :) hope everyone likes

Nice old beast you've got there, looks in great shape. H reg is late '90 - early '91, so you've got one of the last of the mk2s there. Going to look sweet once you've lost that tow bar and fitted the scala alloys :D

Mk2 and Mk3 shared the H reg, either end of the registration year.... mine was one of the earliest mk3s and the best documentation i can find on it shows it being made october/november (?) 1990..

Spec should be quite nice as they'd all be end-of-line run-out editions clearing space for the new stock! Right on your sister getting it in for £50 (just hope it was the dealer being sweet and not getting rid of a duffer! Mind you that light grille's probably worth as much on the spares flea-market)..... have fun..

i'd say keep the towbar (or at least sell it!!) and make a feature rather than throwing such a valuable asset away. i think taking a caravan on holiday with a 1.0 would be a unique rite of driving passage... hehe

At 61k miles it should be raring for more, if you dont thrasp it. Check the oil etc has been changed recently (they probably wouldnt have bothered if selling for that price) and keep it so - and importantly, find out if the cam belt has been changed yet. It'll be maybe a £100-120 job if you find the right place, but at that mileage, neccessary if not already done.

yep apparently all checked out, and passed the MOT with just some new ignition leads needed, my sister's b/f is also a vw mechanic so he gave it a full check out, aparently 1 of the other mechanics offered £250 for it when he saw it up on the ramp but my sister has already claimed it. lol i'll probably be selling the tow bar at sum point so i'll let any budding caravan owning polo drivers know as soon as i do. don't all get your notes ready at once :)

Six adults in a fiat panda surely isnt legal either but its fantastic fun to and from the pub (one of them has to go lengthways)... or nine in a sierra estate off to the beach (ENORMOUS, volvo-rivalling load bay) :D

Just tell them to cover themselves in a black tarp if there's any interest from the law. Sounds like a plan!

You could always get your paws on another blue squareback that's either scrapped or soon on it's way there, and set to - leaving the tailgate on this time! :) Wonder if the lights work, as well?

Heck if that one has a towbar as well, make yourself two, then if you're in a mood to protest and p*ss people off, you can then create a vehicle train that's technically still under speed limits of 40mph on the m'way and 20mph EVERYWHERE else thanks to some unrepealed laws :D Sorry guv i wasnt meaning to cause an obstruction, i just didnt want to be speeding - could be very dangerous to exceed the legal maximum with a setup like this.

Ahem. Er. De-threadjack!
