i guess i can try removing the wiring from the sensor connector and refit in case there is a bad contact, other than that Im stumped

Just ordered a new connector for the sensor (part: 357 972 753)
At least this should narrow down what the issue might be.

im 99% sure its not the wiring - it wouldnt just fail like that as VW wiring is very high quality.

On vag com, in instruments, run the diagnostics and see if the speedo diagnostic runs as it has a good self test feature

Hi Alex

Just been out to the car but in instruments, I dont seem to have a run diagnostics option, below are screen shots of my options...

Alex you have a PM.

On a positive note I changed the coolant temp sensor whis is all working
The MOT is due in Jan will they check the speedo, I presume its a fail if its not working?

Alex you have a PM.

Just ran the Output tests..

all lights and gauges work fine except for the speedo, so as you suspected it must be a clock issue.
From reading the haynes it looks like one big plug that goes into the instrument panel instead of individual wires for each instrument, is this something I can fix or will it need to go to a garage, if so any ideas where, I guess VW will charge a fortune?
